We all know that Cycles is a progressive renderer. This allows us render something multiple times and then combine them to form an image practically identical to an image rendered once with the combined number of samples. This is called image stacking.
For example, we can render an image 5 times with 20 samples each, then combine them to make an image that looks like it was rendered once with 100 samples. This is useful particularly in rendering animations and doing some primitive network rendering. It also essentially enables us to to pause and resume renders.
