As Unity continues to grow, we're partnering with more and more industry big-hitters. By working with them, we can ensure that our engine works more smoothly with their technology. This is a win win win situation. It's good for Unity, good for our partners and good for Unity users everywhere.
One of those partners is Qualcomm. In the following blog post, Qualcomm's Product Manager Umberto Cannarsa explains a little bit about some of the improvements Unity users can benefit from right now as a consequence of their work with Unity. They'll be showcasing this new tech at our Unite 2013 conference in Vancouver. Over to you Umberto!
In March this year we started working with Unity on a project to help improve the performance of Unity-authored games and applications running on the Windows and Android devices (there are now over 1000 on sale or announced) powered by Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ processors.
These are the fruits of our labor – we hope you can use them to make some great content!
Hardware-accelerated graphics – Unity 4.2 now supports OpenGL ES 3.0, as do the latest Adreno 300-series Qualcomm® GPUs. You can take advantage of this to accelerate a host of great graphics features like instancing and occlusion queries.
Augmented Reality – Vuforia™ enables your apps to recognize objects and images which can then generate augmented reality (AR) experiences and unlock features and content for users. The
Vuforia™ SDK puts vision capabilities inside the Unity IDE so you can easily add them to apps and games. Over 4,500 titles on iOS and Android use Vuforia and most of them were built in Unity, including
LEGO Connect and
Guinness World Records.
At Unite, Qualcomm® will demonstrate two new features from the Vuforia SDK: text recognition and 3D cylindrical targets like cups and cans.
Proximity-based, multiplayer gaming – Another cool new Qualcomm® innovation is AllJoyn™. It enables apps to discover, connect to and
play with nearby users over fast, peer-to-peer connections, and across Android, iOS and Windows platforms.
If you're coming to Unite 2013, we'd love to see you at our sponsor booth. If not, you can always catch up on the stuff we're doing to help make Unity games run better on our processors through our
website.
