For the very first Blender Guru competition, I decided on the theme
‘Living in the Slum’. Over the course of the month, it received
96 entries from the blender community! WOW!
There were some outstanding entries, but obviously I could only choose one.

You won because not only does your scene look authentic, but it also works as a piece of art. Looking through the scene you can see telltale signs that you’ve done your research. From the build of rubbish to the unorganized roof timber, everything looks completely believable. Although you used a large photo background, I thought it blended perfectly with the rest of your scene and didn’t at all detract from the scene (as they usually do). Overall I thought you captured the theme of ‘Living in the Slum’ brilliantly. Well done Draguu!

almost won, intrinsic3d! The only thing letting you down was the lack of contrast around the main figure. Other than that I absolutely love it. The emotion of the character is completely believable, and the modelling of the buildings, car and foreground is flawless. You even added realistic atmospheric haze and noise. Top stuff! The ‘wet’ look and the night lighting is brilliant. The wrinkled paper and cardboard house look amazing. The only thing I can fault is that the it looks too clean! Multiply the rubbish by about 10 times

Brilliant modelling, texturing and attention to detail. I can tell that you’ve done your research on this! The only thing that let you down was the low lighting. Increasing the sun’s energy and sharpening the shadows would work wonders

Instead of showing the environment of the slum, you’ve focused on one individuals life. Which shows powerful artistic direction! Making the characters face the focus of the image is a very daring move. So for that I give kudos

Hey I recognize this place
This has some of the best lighting from the competition. It really draws your attention to the center of the image. The natural vignette is an added plus. The only thing stopping you from winning was that it didn’t fit the theme too well. In my opinion a slum should be a bit dirtier

Definitely a depressing scene! From the toys on display, we can imagine that this community was once home to playful children and loving families, but is now evacuated. There are some lighting and texturing issues, but they weren’t too noticeable. Overall I like it. The ivy was a nice touch too
